First Woman Grandmaster

S. Vijayalakshmi, a pioneering figure in Indian chess, made history in 2000 when she became India’s first Woman Grandmaster (WGM). This monumental achievement took place at the Asian Women’s Chess Championship held in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

Early Beginnings: Born on March 25, 1979, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Vijayalakshmi began playing chess at a young age, inspired by her father. Her talent became evident as she dominated national championships and consistently performed at the international level.
