Charles John Canning, 1st Earl Canning, served as the first Viceroy of India from 1858 to 1862. He was appointed to this position following the Indian Rebellion of 1857, during which he also held the role of Governor-General. His tenure as Viceroy was marked by significant administrative reforms and efforts to stabilize British rule in India.
One of Canning’s notable contributions was the establishment of the Indian Civil Services Examination, which opened up the Indian Civil Services to Indians, thereby laying the foundation for a more inclusive administrative system.
Canning’s tenure was also marked by the aftermath of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, during which he faced the complex task of restoring order and implementing policies to prevent future uprisings. He passed away on June 17, 1862, in London.
