First satellite earth station for domestic communications – Secunderabad

India’s first satellite earth station for domestic communications was established in Secunderabad, Telangana (formerly in Andhra Pradesh). This station marked a significant milestone in India’s communication infrastructure, laying the foundation for the development of satellite-based communication services in the country.

The satellite earth station at Secunderabad became operational in 1967.

It was set up to facilitate communication with the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) and international satellites, providing better connectivity for voice, data, and television transmission

This station played a pivotal role in India’s communication revolution, particularly in expanding television broadcasting and telecommunication services to rural and remote areas.

It served as a critical node in linking India’s domestic networks with international communication systems.

Over time, India expanded its network of earth stations to support the growing needs of domestic and international communication, particularly after the launch of the INSAT program in 1983.

Modern satellite communication systems, coupled with advanced technologies, have now largely integrated with newer facilities beyond Secunderabad.

This achievement underscores India’s early investments in self-reliant communication technology, which later evolved into comprehensive satellite systems like GSAT and GAGAN.
