First Judge in International Court of Justice – Dr. Nagender Singh

Dr. Nagendra Singh was the first Indian to serve as a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). He was appointed in 1973 and served until 1988, including a term as President from 1985 to 1988.

Before his tenure at the ICJ, Dr. Singh served as the Chief Election Commissioner of India from October 1, 1972, to February 6, 1973.

Dr. Singh was deeply involved in various diplomatic conferences and served as a delegate to the Second Geneva Conference on the Law of the Sea. He was also a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 1967 to 1972.

In 1973, Dr. Singh was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in recognition of his distinguished service in the field of public affairs.

Dr. Singh’s legacy continues to inspire those in the field of international law and diplomacy.
