Praveen Kumar Becomes First Indian to Win Gold at 2019 World Wushu Championship

In a landmark achievement for Indian martial arts, Praveen Kumar became the first Indian male athlete to clinch a gold medal at the Wushu World Championships. Competing in the men’s 48 kg Sanda category at the 15th edition of the championships held in Shanghai, Kumar defeated Russel Diaz of the Philippines with a 2-1 scoreline in the final.

Kumar’s journey to the top was marked by determination and resilience. Hailing from Kalanaur village in Haryana’s Rohtak district, he initially pursued boxing but transitioned to Wushu in 2013 after facing setbacks in his boxing career. His dedication to the sport paid off when he won the senior nationals in 2015, setting the stage for his future successes.

In the semifinals of the 2019 World Championships, Kumar showcased his prowess by defeating Uzbekistan’s Khasan Ikromov 2-0, securing his place in the final.

India’s performance at the championships was commendable, with the team finishing third overall in the Sanda events. Alongside Kumar’s gold, Poonam (women’s 75 kg) and Sanathoi Devi (women’s 52 kg) secured silver medals, while Vikrant Baliyan earned a bronze in the men’s 60 kg category.

Kumar’s historic victory not only adds a significant chapter to India’s sporting achievements but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring martial artists across the nation.
