MS Dhoni’s Iconic 183 Runs Innings: A Historic Day in Cricket

MS Dhoni played his first international match for India in 2004. Known for his long hair back then, no one could have predicted that he would become one of India’s greatest cricketers. October 31, 2005, remains unforgettable for Dhoni and his fans as he played a historic innings against Sri Lanka on this day.

The Match Overview

In 2005, the Sri Lankan team toured India for a seven-match ODI series. India had already won the first two matches. The third match took place in Jaipur, where Sri Lanka posted a massive score of 298 runs, thanks to Kumar Sangakkara’s 138-run innings. In response, India chased down the target with 23 balls to spare, taking a 3-0 lead in the series.

MS Dhoni’s Historic Innings

During this match, MS Dhoni stunned the cricket world by scoring an unbeaten 183 runs, creating a sensation in international cricket. Chasing 299 runs, India lost Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket early. Dhoni, who had started batting at No. 3 earlier that year, stepped up and partnered with Virender Sehwag for a crucial 92-run stand.

Even as Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh, and other batsmen came and went, Dhoni held his ground and launched a relentless attack on Sri Lanka’s bowlers. He remained unbeaten on 183 runs off 145 balls, hitting 15 fours and 10 sixes. His knock set the world record for the highest individual score in an ODI chase at the time.

However, this record was later broken in the 2011 World Cup when Australia’s Shane Watson scored 185 runs off 96 balls against Bangladesh. Despite that, Dhoni’s 183-run innings remains one of the most memorable performances in cricket history.
