In a remarkable culinary feat, brothers Exodus and Iggy Chaudhry from Delavan, Wisconsin, set a new Guinness World Record for the largest grilled cheese sandwich on October 21, 2023. The monumental sandwich measured 1.89 meters (6 feet 2.41 inches) in width, 3.32 meters (10 feet 10.7 inches) in length, and 7 centimeters (2.75 inches) in thickness, weighing a staggering 189.9 kilograms (418 pounds 11 ounces).
The ambitious project required over 40 kilograms (88 pounds 2.95 ounces) of cheese and more than 136 kilograms (300 pounds) of dough. To accommodate the sandwich’s massive size, the brothers and their team constructed a custom giant griddle. The cooking process involved open flames to grill the bottom and blow torches to brown the top, ensuring the cheese melted uniformly and both sides achieved a perfect crisp.
This endeavor was more than a record-setting attempt; it was a community effort. Friends, family, and neighbors collaborated in the month-long preparation leading up to the event. After achieving the record, portions of the colossal sandwich were served to attendees at the Tripoli Shrine Center in Milwaukee, with the majority donated to local food banks, reflecting the brothers’ commitment to giving back to their community.
Exodus and Iggy, aged 11 and 10 respectively, are no strangers to ambitious projects. They host a YouTube channel, “The Exodus and Iggy Show,” boasting over 154,000 subscribers. Inspired by a video of the world’s largest pizza, the brothers decided to pursue a ‘big food’ record of their own, choosing a grilled cheese sandwich to honor Wisconsin’s rich cheese heritage.
Their successful attempt not only surpassed the previous record held since 2000 by Cabot Creamery of Vermont but also showcased the brothers’ dedication, community spirit, and the culinary pride of Wisconsin.
