Hongqi HS6 Breaks Guinness Record for Longest Distance by Plug-In Hybrid SUV

China’s luxury automaker FAW has officially entered the record books, announcing that its Hongqi HS6 Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by a plug-in hybrid SUV without refuelling or recharging.

The luxurious SUV completed an epic journey of 2,327.343 kilometres (1,446.13 miles) on a single tank of fuel and a single full battery charge, shattering the previous record and demonstrating the extreme efficiency of its hybrid system.

The drive, verified by Guinness World Records officials, was designed to test the HS6 PHEV’s maximum comprehensive range under real-world conditions.

Distance: 2,327.343 km

Route: The car departed from Shangri-La on October 30 and concluded its journey five days later in Guangzhou on November 3.

Key Challenge: The route presented a significant challenge, descending from the high-altitude terrain of Shangri-La (over 3,000 metres elevation) to near sea level in Guangzhou. This elevation drop likely contributed to the vehicle’s exceptional energy efficiency through extensive regenerative braking.

The Hongqi HS6 PHEV, which is scheduled to begin pre-sale in China on November 15, is powered by an advanced hybrid system centered around a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine.

Powertrain: 1.5T engine with an electric motor.

Battery Options: The SUV offers battery packs with a CLTC pure electric range of up to 250 km, demonstrating strong electric-only capabilities before relying on its efficient gasoline engine.

Significance: This world record is a major victory for Chinese automotive technology, highlighting the maturity and endurance of domestically developed plug-in hybrid systems as global focus shifts toward long-range, energy-efficient vehicles.

The achievement positions the Hongqi HS6 PHEV as a serious contender in the mid-to-large luxury SUV segment, appealing to consumers seeking both premium features and anxiety-free range.
