Bihar to Launch First-Ever Water Metro on the Ganga

Bihar is poised to make history with the launch of its first water metro service on the Ganga River, a landmark initiative aimed at boosting river transport and urban connectivity in the state’s capital. The innovative service is expected to begin operations in January 2026, marking a significant step toward sustainable and modern public transportation.

The Patna Water Metro Project — a ₹908-crore venture undertaken by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Bihar government — will introduce eco-friendly, fully equipped boat services along the historic river. The first vessel, a 50-seat electric boat named MV Gomdhar Kunwar, has already been readied for service, with charging stations and related infrastructure currently under final preparation.

Once operational, the service will link key ghats along a scenic 10.5-kilometre corridor between Digha Ghat and Kangan Ghat, with additional stops at Gai Ghat and Gandhi Ghat in Patna. Designed to offer a comfortable, air-conditioned, and modern commuting experience, the service is expected to ease road congestion, reduce travel time, and provide a cost-effective, environmentally friendly transport alternative for daily commuters and tourists alike.

Officials say the project aligns with India’s broader push toward sustainable urban mobility, integrating water transport with existing and future multimodal networks to improve connectivity and support economic growth. With trial runs already underway, authorities are optimistic that this river-based metro will soon become a hallmark of modern inland navigation in eastern India.
