“Father-Son Duo Embark on Round-the-World Cycling Record Attempt”

In a heartwarming and ambitious adventure, a father and son from the UK have set off on a record-breaking attempt to cycle around the world, aiming to etch their names into the record books while deepening their bond through the journey of a lifetime.

Mark Thompson, 48, and his 17-year-old son Leo began their epic ride from London’s Tower Bridge on Sunday morning, cheered on by friends, family, and cycling enthusiasts. The duo plans to pedal more than 29,000 kilometers across six continents in under 180 days, a feat that would make them the fastest parent-child team to cycle around the world.

“This is about more than just a record,” Mark said before they took off. “It’s about adventure, resilience, and creating memories with my son that will last forever.”

Their carefully planned route will take them through Europe, Asia, Australia, the Americas, and Africa, before looping back to the UK. They’ll face every kind of terrain and climate — from the icy winds of the Alps to the scorching sun of the Australian Outback — carrying all their gear on specially designed touring bikes.

For Leo, the youngest cyclist ever to attempt the journey in a duo, it’s the realization of a dream. “I’ve grown up watching videos of long-distance cyclists,” he said. “To actually be out here doing it — with my dad — it’s unreal.”

The two are raising funds for global children’s education charities, hoping their miles will make a difference in classrooms around the world. They’re also documenting the trip via a dedicated YouTube channel and blog, sharing daily updates, behind-the-scenes stories, and videos of the breathtaking landscapes they pass.

The current Guinness World Record for the fastest circumnavigation by bicycle (in a pair) is just over 180 days, meaning every hour — and every pedal stroke — will count.

“This will test our strength, patience, and teamwork,” said Mark. “But whatever comes our way, we’ll face it together.”
