In a stunning case that has fascinated and perplexed the medical community, a 19-year-old woman in Brazil gave birth to fraternal twins who were confirmed by DNA testing to have different biological fathers.
The incredibly rare phenomenon, known as Heteropaternal Superfecundation, occurs when two eggs released during the same ovulation cycle are fertilized by sperm from two separate men during distinct acts of intercourse.
The case was confirmed after the mother sought a paternity test for the twins. While the first potential father matched the DNA of one child, he did not match the other. Subsequent testing with a second man confirmed he was the father of the other twin.
This biological anomaly is exceptionally uncommon in humans, with experts stating that only a few dozen confirmed cases have ever been recorded globally.
