Liesl Benecke, affectionately known as the “Minion Lady,” has turned her passion for the mischievous yellow characters from Despicable Me into a Guinness World Record-breaking collection. On 16 February 2025, the Jindalee resident was officially awarded the world record for the largest collection of Minions memorabilia, with a verified 1,035 unique items and the number continues to grow.
What began as a joyful moment during a 2010 family movie outing blossomed into a lifelong obsession. Benecke’s home now doubles as a vibrant shrine to Minions, filled with everything from plush toys and figurines to clothing, posters, and even themed kitchen utensils collected over nearly 15 years.
Achieving Guinness World Record status was no small feat. To qualify, every piece had to be official licensed merchandise and distinct, requiring meticulous cataloging, individual photography, and expert witnesses to verify the count — a challenge Benecke embraced with enthusiasm. Her collection spans the globe, with items sourced from places like Singapore, Japan, Italy, China, and the USA, and includes rare finds such as Swarovski crystal figurines valued at nearly A$1,000 each.
Among her many treasures, Benecke’s favourite Minion is Stuart — so cherished that she even has a tattoo of him on her forearm, though tattoos don’t count toward the official tally. She also keeps a giant Stuart plushie buckled into the backseat of her car, spreading smiles wherever she goes. For Benecke, collecting Minions isn’t just about owning quirky merchandise — it’s about joy, memories, and community. Her family, friends, and even coworkers play “Minion hunters,” helping her spot new pieces to add to the ever-growing collection.
With plans to continue expanding her collection — and likely outgrowing her current space — the Minion Lady shows no signs of slowing down. After all, in her world, there’s always room for one more Minion.
