India’s First University – Nalanda University

Nalanda University, established in the 5th century CE during the Gupta Empire, is considered one of the world’s oldest residential universities. It attracted scholars from across Asia, offering a diverse curriculum that included subjects like medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. The university was renowned for its rigorous academic environment and significant contributions to education and culture.

On June 19, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University near Rajgir, Bihar. This modern campus aims to revive the institution’s historical legacy and provide state-of-the-art facilities for contemporary education.

The university offers a range of degree programs across various disciplines, including Focuses on history and archaeology. Dedicated to environmental sciences. Concentrates on Buddhist philosophy and culture. Explores philosophical and religious studies. Offers programs in languages and humanities. Provides courses in management and business studies. Additionally, the university offers degrees in the study of Sanātana Dharma and diplomas in languages such as Sanskrit, Pāli, Tibetan, Japanese, and Korean.

Nalanda University has established partnerships with several international institutions, including Peking University, University of Ostrava, Dongguk University, Deakin University, Otani University, Kanazawa University, The City University of New York, Chulalongkorn University, and others. These collaborations aim to enhance academic exchange and research opportunities.

In May 2024, the university inaugurated the Centre for Indo-Persian Studies, featuring a concert by renowned Iranian musician Farman Fathalian on Buddha Purnima. This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to fostering cultural exchange and interdisciplinary studies.

The revival of Nalanda University signifies a renewed commitment to higher education and research, building upon its rich historical legacy while embracing modern academic standards.
