Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950)

Position: First Deputy Prime Minister of India

Date of Assumption: 15 August 1947

Additional Role: Home Minister

Prime Minister: Jawaharlal Nehru

Sardar Patel became the first Deputy Prime Minister of India after the country gained independence on 15 August 1947. He was a part of the first cabinet formed after independence, which was headed by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India.

Along with the Deputy Prime Minister role, Patel also served as the Home Minister, where he played a pivotal role in post-independence India.

One of his most significant contributions was leading the effort to integrate the princely states into the newly formed Indian Union. This effort involved negotiating with rulers of over 500 princely states, persuading them to join India, thereby preventing the fragmentation of the country. His success in this mission earned him the title of the “Iron Man of India.”

Sardar Patel’s leadership and decisive actions during the early years of independent India were critical to the country’s unity and the creation of a strong, cohesive nation.
