Padma Shri 2025 Awarded to Hugh and Late Colleen Gantzer for Pioneering Indian Travel Journalism

The Government of India has posthumously honoured Colleen Gantzer and conferred the Padma Shri on her husband Hugh Gantzer, recognizing the iconic duo’s immense contribution to Literature and Education – Journalism, particularly in the realm of Indian travel writing. The couple, based in Mussoorie, have been trailblazers in bringing India’s cultural, historical, and natural heritage to light through engaging and accessible journalism.

With a career spanning over six decades, Hugh and Colleen Gantzer are credited with authoring over 30 books, more than 3,000 articles, and producing dozens of travel documentaries for Doordarshan, most notably the acclaimed series Looking Beyond. Their work opened up India’s lesser-known destinations to readers across the globe and played a pivotal role in popularising travel journalism in India long before the age of digital blogging.

“Travel writing is not just about geography; it’s about people, culture, and memory,” Hugh Gantzer once said, encapsulating the human touch that defined their storytelling.

Colleen Gantzer passed away in November 2024 at the age of 90. She is remembered not just as a writer but also as a strong voice for inclusive, sustainable tourism and for bringing women’s perspectives into travel literature. Her Padma Shri was awarded posthumously, a rare honour for her timeless legacy.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated the couple, stating:

“The Gantzers helped shape the global image of Uttarakhand and India through their vivid, sensitive travel writing. Their contribution is truly priceless.”
