The Government of India has posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honour, upon Shri M. T. Vasudevan Nair in recognition of his exceptional contribution to Literature and Education. A literary icon of Kerala and one of India’s finest storytellers, the late M.T. Vasudevan Nair leaves behind a profound legacy in Malayalam literature and cinema.
Born in 1933 in Kudallur, Kerala, M.T., as he was popularly known, redefined Malayalam fiction with his evocative storytelling, deep psychological insights, and sensitive portrayal of Kerala’s cultural landscape. His classic works such as Naalukettu, Asuravithu, Kaalam, and Randamoozham became milestones in Indian literature. Randamoozham, a retelling of the Mahabharata from Bhima’s perspective, is widely regarded as one of the greatest Indian novels of the 20th century.
Beyond literature, M.T. was an acclaimed screenwriter and filmmaker. He wrote over 50 screenplays and directed critically acclaimed films like Nirmalyam, which won the National Award for Best Feature Film. His writing brought literary finesse to Malayalam cinema and played a crucial role in its artistic evolution.
Already a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and the Jnanpith Award, M.T.’s posthumous Padma Vibhushan honour is a testament to his towering influence on generations of writers, scholars, and artists.
