Ahmedabad Students Launch ‘Book & Box’ A Free, Open-Air Library Movement Inspired by Kerala’s First Book Village

Imagine taking a peaceful stroll through a park and suddenly spotting a small wooden box filled with books — free to read, free to borrow, and free to share. That vision has now become reality in Ahmedabad, thanks to two innovative third-year students, Heet Doshi and Om Thakkar, who have launched Book & Box, an open-access community library initiative inspired by Perumkulam, Kerala’s first book village.

The idea took root after the duo watched a social media video showcasing Kerala’s unique reading spaces — book nests, literary cafés, and open libraries that invite anyone to pause and read. “We felt this beautiful concept shouldn’t stay confined to one village — it deserves to spread across the country,” Doshi told Ahmedabad Mirror.

Their first Book & Box installation was unveiled on 23 June 2024 at Parimal Garden, instantly capturing the attention of walkers, families, and curious passers-by. Within days, people began donating books, exchanging them, and discussing titles with strangers — a spontaneous revival of community reading culture.

Encouraged by the response, Doshi and Thakkar plan to set up six more book boxes by November 2024 in Ahmedabad’s largest parks. Each weather-resistant box can store up to 30 books and costs around ₹5,000–₹6,000 to build — an amount often covered by local sponsors who believe in the initiative.

Despite initial concerns about missing books, the students trust the community’s reading ethics. “Those who read don’t steal, and those who steal don’t read,” Doshi said, highlighting their belief in kindness and shared responsibility.

More than just mini-libraries, Book & Box installations are becoming hubs of connection — places where strangers bond over stories, children discover the joy of reading, and communities cultivate a culture of sharing rather than owning.

The movement reflects a broader shift toward public, accessible, and community-driven learning spaces, blending simplicity with impactful social change.
