World’s Largest Concrete Gnome

A whimsical giant has earned its place in the record books! “Elwood,” the world’s largest concrete gnome sculpture, towers over visitors at Reiman Gardens on the campus of Iowa State University. Built to celebrate garden ornamentation and attract attention to the botanical space, Elwood has become both a beloved local landmark and a world‑record‑worthy art installation.

Elwood stands an impressive 15 feet tall and weighs about 3,500 pounds, crafted from steel‑reinforced concrete with traditional gnome features including a pointy hat, boots and cheerful expression. The sculpture was created by artists Andy and Connie Kautza of National Rock and Sculpture, Inc. in 2010 and was officially unveiled on Earth Day, April 22, 2010 as part of Reiman Gardens’ celebration of garden decoration.

Originally intended to be the largest garden gnome in the world, Elwood’s builders discovered partway through construction that a taller gnome existed in Poland. However, because that competitor was made of fiberglass, Elwood still earned the title of world’s largest concrete gnome, a distinction proudly held to this day.

The giant gnome has since become a favourite photo‑stop for visitors to the gardens and remains a playful reminder that even everyday garden ornaments can be transformed into record‑breaking art.
