Nigerian wigmaker Helen Williams has officially made history by crafting the longest handmade wig in the world, measuring a staggering 351.28 metres (1,152 feet 5 inches).
The extraordinary hairpiece took 11 days to complete and cost about two million naira (£2,000 / $2,500). Williams used 1,000 bundles of hair, 12 cans of hairspray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and an astonishing 6,250 hair clips to assemble the record-breaking wig.
“This achievement is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I still cannot believe it,” said an elated Williams, who has been a professional wigmaker for eight years.
Despite her experience, Williams admitted the task was physically and mentally draining: “I felt exhausted during the process. But friends and family encouraged me. I did not want to let them down, so I maintained my focus.”
The final challenge came in finding a location large enough to stretch out the entire wig for official measurement. On 7 July, she laid the hairpiece out on a highway connecting the cities of Lagos and Abeokuta, where its full length could finally be verified.
Helen Williams’ dedication and craftsmanship have now earned her a prestigious place in the Guinness World Records, and admiration from across the globe.
