On March 18, 1990, two men disguised as police officers gained entry into the museum during the early hours, overpowering security guards and making off with 13 works of art. Among the stolen pieces was The Concert by Johannes Vermeer, considered one of the most valuable missing paintings in the world.
The stolen collection also included works by Rembrandt and Edgar Degas, with the total estimated value exceeding $500 million. Despite extensive investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, no arrests have ever been made, and the artworks have never been recovered.
The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum has left the empty frames hanging on its walls as a haunting reminder of the loss and as a symbol of hope that the pieces will one day return.
Authorities continue to follow leads and have offered substantial rewards for information leading to the recovery of the stolen art. Experts believe the works may still exist in private collections or hidden locations, waiting to be rediscovered.
