Goodbye Smog!” Delhi Gets India’s First Microalgae Air Tower to Fight Pollution

In a major step toward combating air pollution, Delhi has installed India’s first Microalgae Air Tower, marking a significant innovation in climate technology.

Developed by startup Carbelim from IIT Madras, the tower has been set up along the Aerocity highway to help reduce harmful pollutants in the air.

The system uses microalgae—a natural and sustainable solution—to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrogen oxides, two major contributors to urban air pollution. By leveraging biological processes, the tower purifies air in an eco-friendly way, offering an alternative to traditional filtration systems.

Experts say the initiative represents a major leap in India’s climate-tech efforts, combining innovation with environmental responsibility. The use of microalgae not only helps clean the air but also supports sustainable practices aligned with global environmental goals.

If proven effective on a larger scale, such towers could be deployed across major cities in India, providing a scalable solution to the country’s ongoing air quality challenges.
