A group of endurance runners has made history by completing the world’s deepest underground marathon, earning official recognition from Guinness World Records.
The extraordinary race took place deep beneath the surface in the Pyhäsalmi Mine, one of Europe’s deepest mines. Participants ran the full marathon distance of 42.195 kilometers at a depth of over 1,400 meters, navigating dark tunnels, humid conditions, and uneven terrain.
Organizing such an event required extensive safety measures, including controlled ventilation, lighting systems, and medical support to ensure the well-being of runners in the extreme underground environment. Despite the challenges, the participants demonstrated remarkable endurance and determination.
The achievement highlights the growing popularity of unconventional sporting events, pushing the limits of where and how athletic feats can be accomplished. Runners described the experience as both physically demanding and surreal, given the unique setting far below the Earth’s surface.
