World’s Tallest Planted Christmas Tree

A towering giant sequoia in Cragside, Northumberland has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest planted Christmas tree, adding a new festive landmark to the holiday season. The majestic Wellingtonia (giant redwood), which was planted in the 19th century, now stands at 44.70 metres (146 ft 7 in), earning its place in the record books after being decorated for Christmas with thousands of lights and giant bows. Unlike cut trees brought in for seasonal displays, the Cragside tree remains alive and planted — a requirement for this specific world record category. To meet Guinness World Records criteria, the tree was adorned with more than 1,300 multicoloured lights and two large festive bows, transforming it into a glittering holiday spectacle visible across the historic estate.

Officials and visitors alike celebrated the achievement, with Steve Howard, Visitor Operations Manager at Cragside, reflecting on the meticulous planning required to both protect the tree’s health and mount such an ambitious decoration effort.

The record‑setting Wellingtonia now stands as not just a seasonal attraction but a year‑round symbol of enduring natural beauty — towering above twice the height of many iconic local landmarks and drawing guests from across the UK and beyond this Christmas season.
