Meghalaya is set to make history in Indian football as Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma laid the concrete foundation for the Mawkhanu Football Stadium Complex on December 11. Once completed, the stadium will be India’s largest football-specific venue, boasting a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators and world-class facilities for players and fans alike.
The ambitious project, backed by an investment of ₹732 crore, aims to provide a dedicated stage for football in the country and nurture the sport in the Northeast, a region known for its passionate football culture. The stadium will offer advanced amenities, enhanced spectator experiences, and professional-grade infrastructure, elevating Meghalaya’s position in the national football landscape.
At the foundation-laying ceremony, CM Sangma emphasized that the stadium represents a new era for sports in Meghalaya, one that will help identify and develop local talent and place the state at the forefront of Indian football development. On the same day, he also inaugurated the construction of a synthetic athletic track in Ri-Bhoi District, aimed at supporting young athletes with improved training facilities.
The government’s initiative underscores a broader push to strengthen sports infrastructure across the state, ensuring budding athletes have access to world-class resources. Construction of the Mawkhanu Football Stadium is expected to continue over the coming years, transforming New Shillong into a hub for high-level football and inspiring future generations to pursue their dreams in sports.
