Hyderabad’s Bowenpally Market Turns 10 Tons of Daily Waste into Energy, Biofuel, and Fertiliser

Hyderabad’s Bowenpally market has emerged as a shining example of urban sustainability, converting 10 tons of daily waste into electricity, biofuel, and organic fertiliser. This innovative system not only addresses the growing challenge of urban waste management but also supports local infrastructure and livelihoods.

The integrated waste-to-energy project powers streetlights, market stalls, and the water supply system, ensuring a reliable source of energy while reducing the market’s dependency on conventional electricity. By diverting waste from landfills, the initiative prevents approximately 6,290 kilograms of CO2 emissions annually, contributing to cleaner air and a lower carbon footprint for the city.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project has a strong social impact. It has created employment opportunities for women, empowering them economically while supporting sustainable urban operations. The initiative has become a community hub, where technology and social responsibility intersect to improve daily life.

The project was developed collaboratively by CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT) and Ahuja Engineering, combining scientific expertise with practical engineering solutions. Officials highlight Bowenpally as a replicable model for other urban markets, demonstrating how cities can simultaneously tackle waste, generate energy, and foster social development.
