Marking five decades of statehood, Sikkim has unveiled a monumental project that pioneers a harmonious blend of ecological preservation, cultural heritage, and cutting-edge technology: India’s largest Cool House Orchidarium and an iconic public plaza.
The initiatives, collectively known as ‘Swarna Jayanti Maitri Manjari,’ celebrate Sikkim’s 50th anniversary of integration with India and reaffirm its status as the nation’s first fully organic state and a global leader in nature-first values.
The centerpiece is the technologically advanced Cool House Orchidarium, which is reported to be the largest in the world. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Kanchenjunga range, the facility is a haven designed to sustain over 122 different orchid species and more than 600 plant species from diverse climate zones.
The architectural challenge was met with fluid innovation, creating a precisely controlled indoor environment. The Cool House utilizes:
Continuous Data Monitoring: Sensors constantly regulate humidity, UV exposure, CO2 levels, and temperature.
Automated Systems: Hydraulic actuators adjust fenestration openings to optimize environmental conditions, ensuring energy efficiency in a 24/7 operation.
Sustainable Design: Natural ventilation is maximized, supplemented by cloud misting and drip irrigation systems to conserve water, reducing reliance on conventional air conditioning.
The Orchidarium and its accompanying museum are located beneath a new public festival plaza, crowned with monumental insignia symbolizing the fifty years of friendship and progress, drawing inspiration from Buddhist teachings and the Ashoka Chakra.
The state government views this project as a powerful tool for sustainable tourism and cultural diplomacy. The site is expected to host national and international orchid festivals year-round, supporting the revival of the local orchid trade and fostering significant engagement across social and commercial sectors.
Sikkim’s Golden Jubilee landmark stands as a vibrant testament to the state’s vision of growth where nature remains paramount, integrating the past, present, and sustainable future into one architectural marvel.
