Joey the Canary : Longest-Lived Bird at Age 34

In a remarkable story that’s capturing hearts worldwide, Joey, a bright yellow canary from Devon, England, has officially been recognized as the world’s longest-lived bird, reaching an astonishing 34 years of age — more than three times the average lifespan of his species.

Born in 1991, Joey has outlived not just generations of pet birds, but even some of his owners’ family pets. His remarkable longevity was confirmed this year by avian experts and the Guinness World Records, who described his age as “unprecedented in the recorded history of domestic canaries.”

His owner, Margaret Hensley, now 79, credits Joey’s incredible health to “routine, music, and kindness.” She says, “He’s been my little companion for more than half my life. Every morning, I greet him with a tune on the piano — and he always sings back.”

Experts say Joey’s secret may lie in a combination of stress-free living, a balanced diet of seeds, greens, and soft fruits, and consistent care in a calm environment. “Birds like Joey thrive on familiarity and emotional connection,” explains avian biologist Dr. Emma Caldwell. “His long life is proof of how attentive, affectionate ownership can make a real difference.”

Despite his age, Joey remains lively — still chirping along to classical music and preening proudly in front of his mirror.

As Joey celebrates his 34th birthday, his story stands as a heartwarming reminder that love, care, and a song-filled life can truly make the years take flight.
