The Maldives has officially claimed a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the ‘Most people snorkeling simultaneously,’ following a massive, coordinated effort during the Baani Event in Baa Atoll.
A total of 623 participants simultaneously entered the pristine waters of Villingilifaru Finolhu in Baa Atoll, setting the new global benchmark for collective marine engagement. The event was a collaborative initiative between the Baa Atoll Council and the Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC).
The record-breaking attempt saw local residents, resort staff, and international tourists from 13 islands and 15 resorts unite in a display of community spirit and environmental stewardship. The Baani Event was conceptualized not just as a record attempt, but as a powerful statement promoting the Maldives’ commitment to marine conservation and sustainable tourism practices in its renowned UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Following the successful completion of the snorkeling challenge, a representative from the Guinness World Records organization officially awarded the Maldives a commemorative plaque at the closing ceremony.
VMC Managing Director and CEO, Ibrahim Shiuree, highlighted the significance of the achievement. “This achievement is a proud moment for our nation. It reflects our people’s deep connection with the ocean and our shared responsibility to protect it for generations to come,” said Shiuree, as he presented the official plaque and a commemorative coin to the Baa Atoll Council.
In addition to securing a place in the globally recognized Guinness World Record book, the VMC announced that the landmark achievement will also be enshrined in the Maldives Book of Records, cementing the event as a historic milestone for the island nation.
