Mirabai Chanu wins silver at 2025 World Weightlifting Championships in Norway

India’s Olympic medalist and star weightlifter, Mirabai Chanu, has returned to the global podium in sensational style, securing the silver medal in the women’s 48kg category at the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships in Førde, Norway.

Chanu, competing in the new 48kg division, registered a total lift of 199kg (84kg in Snatch and 115kg in Clean & Jerk). This impressive performance marks her third career medal at the World Championships, following her gold in 2017 and silver in 2022.

While Chanu demonstrated exceptional grit, the gold medal was claimed by Ri Song-gum of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, who delivered a commanding performance. Ri not only won the overall title with a total lift of 213kg but also set a new World Record in the Clean & Jerk (122kg) and the overall Total.

Despite facing stiff competition and struggling slightly in the Snatch segment, Chanu showcased her renowned power in the Clean & Jerk, successfully completing a lift of 115kg—matching her best from the Tokyo Olympics.

The performance in Norway, which comes after her appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympics, confirms the 31-year-old’s successful transition and competitive edge in the lighter weight category as she continues her journey in the new Olympic cycle. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen took the bronze medal with a total lift of 198kg.
