The home of Chesterfield FC, usually a cauldron of standing, cheering, and jumping fans, was the unlikely venue for a massive-scale, low-impact workout on Thursday, as a community group attempted to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of people participating in a chair-based exercise session.
A staggering total of 1,224 people officially registered and took part in the event at the SMH Group Stadium. If verified, the record-breaking turnout will comfortably surpass the existing world record of 731 participants.
The event was organised by Age UK Derby and Derbyshire in partnership with the Chesterfield FC Community Trust’s ‘Live Stronger for Longer’ program, which promotes health and wellbeing for older people.
Organisers are now submitting the evidence to Guinness World Records for official verification.
An Age UK spokesperson highlighted the success of the attempt: “The energy and enthusiasm was incredible. We had a huge turnout of 1,224 participants, completely smashing the old record of 731. We hope this record attempt shines a spotlight on the importance of accessible exercise like chair-based classes for people of all ages and abilities.”
From the youngest participant at seven to the eldest at 93, the event brought together schools, community groups, and the Chesterfield ‘Senior Spireites’ in a shared mission to make history and promote active aging.
