Camlin: India’s Beloved Stationery Brand Celebrates Its Legacy

For generations of Indians, the mere sight of a Camlin compass box or the scent of a fresh box of Camel crayons triggers a powerful rush of childhood nostalgia. This deep, emotional connection often leads to a common misconception: is Camlin an international brand?

The emphatic answer is No. Camlin is a quintessential Indian legacy brand, proudly born in Maharashtra and built on the entrepreneurial vision of the Dandekar family.

A Swadeshi Success Story

The story of Camlin began in 1931 when brothers D. P. Dandekar and G. P. Dandekar started Dandekar & Co. in Mumbai. Their first products were ‘Horse Brand’ ink powders, reflecting the Swadeshi (self-reliance) spirit of the era.

The brand’s transformation and ascent into an icon of Indian childhood are largely credited to the next generation, especially Subhash Dandekar. Taking the helm, he spearheaded the company’s diversification from simple inks into a vast range of stationery and art materials. It was under his leadership that the brand, eventually renamed Camlin, began producing world-class products like pencils, paints, and the famous geometry box that became a staple in every Indian student’s school bag.

“Camlin is not just stationery—it’s an emotion, a symbol of childhood, and a timeless piece of school memories,” remarked a brand historian.

  • Iconic Products: The brand is synonymous with classic items like the sturdy metal Camlin Geometry Box, the smooth-gliding Camel Wax Crayons, and the elegant fountain pens that marked every student’s transition to higher classes.
  • Art Promotion: The company’s All India Camel Art Contest became the largest art competition in the world, nurturing the creativity of millions of young Indians and making art accessible to the masses.

While the company partnered with Japanese major Kokuyo in 2011 to expand its global footprint, the foundation, the heritage, and the indelible link to Indian childhood were laid decades ago by the Dandekar family in Mumbai, making Camlin a truly Made in Maharashtra success story that continues to colour the lives of millions.
