Sikkim Mandates Garbage Bags in Tourist Vehicles to Promote Eco-Friendly Travel

In a significant step toward environmental conservation, the Government of Sikkim has issued a new directive making it mandatory for all tourist vehicles entering the state to carry garbage bags. The rule, which comes into immediate effect, aims to curb littering and preserve the Himalayan state’s fragile ecosystem.

Known for its pristine landscapes, Sikkim has long been a champion of sustainable tourism. The latest initiative is part of a broader campaign to encourage responsible travel and reduce plastic waste in popular tourist areas.

“All vehicles, including taxis, private cars, and buses carrying tourists, must have garbage bags visibly placed inside,” said a spokesperson from the state’s Tourism and Forest Department. “Failure to comply will result in penalties at check posts.”

Officials have also stated that random inspections will be carried out at border entry points to ensure adherence. Additionally, awareness pamphlets are being distributed, urging tourists to respect the state’s ecological balance and dispose of their waste responsibly.

Environmentalists and local communities have welcomed the move, saying it reflects Sikkim’s consistent commitment to green governance. The state was previously recognized for banning plastic bags and promoting organic farming.

With tourist footfall expected to rise during the upcoming travel season, the Sikkim government hopes this initiative will serve as a model for sustainable tourism across India, blending natural beauty with civic responsibility.
