9-Year-Old Hong Kong Climber Veronica Chik Breaks World Record in Fearless Ascent

In an extraordinary display of courage and determination, 9-year-old Veronica Chik from Hong Kong has made history by breaking a national climbing record in China, becoming the youngest person to scale a top-tier outdoor rock route known for its difficulty and vertical challenge.

Veronica completed the “Rock of Life” route in Yangshuo, one of China’s premier rock-climbing destinations, with a speed and precision that left even veteran climbers in awe. She had previously stunned the climbing world by conquering the “China Climb” (rated 5.14a) in under six minutes, despite only recently overcoming a fear of heights.

Trained under renowned coach Liu Yongbang, Veronica’s rapid progress in outdoor climbing over just six months has made her one of the most promising young athletes in the sport. Her record-setting performance also follows a victory in the China National Youth Climbing Championships, where she won the combined boulder-and-lead event.

“I’m so happy and proud. It was hard, but I didn’t give up,” said Veronica, beaming with joy after the climb. Her mother, overwhelmed with emotion, described the achievement as “unbelievable” and credited Veronica’s discipline and love for climbing.

With her sights now set on international competitions—and possibly the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics—Veronica Chik has become a symbol of resilience, youth empowerment, and sporting excellence. Her inspiring journey proves that no peak is too high when you’re climbing with heart.
