In a proud moment for Jammu & Kashmir and the Indian art community, the Government of India has conferred the Padma Shri on Shri Romalo Ram for his outstanding contribution to the field of Art.
A legendary figure in Dogri and traditional folk performance, Shri Romalo Ram has dedicated his life to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir. Known for his mastery of folk singing, storytelling, and theatre, he has been a vital force in keeping regional art forms alive, particularly among the younger generation.
Through decades of dedication, Shri Ram has used his artistic voice to tell stories of tradition, community, and identity, ensuring that the folk arts of Jammu resonate far beyond the borders of the Union Territory. His performances have not only entertained but educated audiences, highlighting the region’s history, values, and deep-rooted artistic legacy.
Reacting to the honour, Shri Romalo Ram said, “This award is for my people, my culture, and the generations who passed on their art so that I could carry it forward.”
Artists, cultural leaders, and institutions across the region have welcomed the recognition, describing him as a “living treasure of Jammu’s folk heritage.”
