“Padma Shri for Shri Narayan Chakraborty: A Champion of Science for Social Good”

Renowned scientist and educator Shri Narayan Chakraborty from West Bengal has been awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, for his significant contributions to the field of Science and Engineering.

A trailblazer in environmental science and biotechnology, Shri Chakraborty is best known for his impactful work in addressing arsenic contamination in groundwater, a major public health challenge in Bengal and other parts of India. His research and innovation have led to the development of practical, community-based solutions for arsenic mitigation, bringing hope and safety to thousands affected by toxic water sources.

With a career spanning decades, Chakraborty has served in various academic and government roles, including as a senior scientific consultant to the West Bengal Biotech Development Corporation. He has also authored several acclaimed books and research publications, including a widely referenced volume on arsenic toxicity and treatment.

Beyond academia and laboratory work, Chakraborty has played a key role in science education and public health awareness, mentoring young scientists and working closely with government agencies and NGOs to implement his research on the ground.
