Shri Drona Bhuyan Honoured with Padma Shri for Promoting Folk Art in Assam

Celebrated folk artist and cultural advocate Shri Drona Bhuyan has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in the field of Art, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to preserving Assam’s rich tribal and folk art traditions.

Hailing from a remote village in Assam, Shri Bhuyan is renowned for his mastery of Agnigarh terracotta sculpture and Sualkuchi-inspired weaving art. Through meticulous craftsmanship and devotion, he has revived lost patterns, motifs, and techniques passed down through generations.

“Every piece of art from Assam tells the story of our land, our rivers, and our people,” Bhuyan often reflects, emphasizing the cultural depth of his work.

Beyond his personal creations, Shri Bhuyan has played a transformative role in uplifting local artisans. He has established training centers where young people learn traditional art forms, and partnered with regional cooperatives to help artisans market their crafts and secure fair incomes.
