In a moving display of patriotism, courage, and endurance, 12-year-old Arav Bhardwaj has been awarded the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2025 in the Sports category for his extraordinary cycling expedition to commemorate Kargil Vijay Diwas 2024.
Arav completed a 1,251 km solo journey on a bicycle, riding from the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, to India Gate in New Delhi. The journey, spanning diverse and often harsh terrain, was a heartfelt tribute to the bravery of Indian soldiers who laid down their lives during the 1999 Kargil War.
Arav, a Class 7 student and passionate cyclist, undertook this monumental challenge not for fame, but to honour the memory of India’s fallen heroes. “I wanted to do something that would show how grateful we are for their sacrifice,” said Arav.
Starting in the high-altitude cold of Kargil and braving steep mountain roads, heavy rains, and long stretches of isolation, Arav’s expedition drew national attention for its message of remembrance and resilience.
The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, India’s highest civilian honour for children under 18, was presented to Arav for his exceptional achievement in sports and his patriotic spirit. The award was conferred by the President of India during a ceremony in New Delhi, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi commending Arav’s “unmatched determination and national pride.”
Arav’s inspiring feat has captured the imagination of the country, earning praise from Army veterans, educators, and athletes alike. His journey not only showcased his physical endurance and mental strength, but also served as a powerful symbol of youth-led patriotism.
Arav hopes to continue cycling for national causes, with plans to take on future rides focused on environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, and honouring India’s heritage. He has also encouraged young people to find their passion and use it for a greater purpose.
At just 12 years old, Arav Bhardwaj has become a symbol of courage on two wheels — a reminder that one small act of tribute, when powered by heart and purpose, can travel a thousand kilometres and touch an entire nation.
