Veteran journalist and educationist Shri Lakshmipathy Ramasubbaiyer, the Joint Managing Editor of Dinamalar, has been awarded the Padma Shri 2025 in the category of Literature and Education – Journalism. The honour acknowledges his over six-decade-long commitment to promoting ethical journalism and advancing higher education in Tamil Nadu.
Shri Ramasubbaiyer began his journey in journalism in 1956 and rose to lead one of Tamil Nadu’s most respected newspapers, Dinamalar. Known for maintaining editorial independence and integrity, he steered the publication without reliance on government advertising, making it a symbol of press freedom in regional media.
Throughout his illustrious career, he has held numerous leadership roles in India’s top media institutions:
- Former Chairman, Press Trust of India (multiple terms)
- Former President, Indian Newspaper Society
- Member, Press Council of India
- President, Indian Language Newspapers Association
His leadership helped shape policies and set standards for responsible journalism nationwide.
Beyond the newsroom, Shri Ramasubbaiyer established the Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy Foundation, under which several premier educational institutions were founded:
- Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science
- RL Institute of Management Studies
- RL Institute of Nautical Sciences
- Krishnamal Ramasubbaiyer School
These institutions have transformed the educational landscape in southern Tamil Nadu, especially for rural youth.
- Received honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt) from Alagappa University and Bharathiar University
- Awarded the Padma Shri 2025 by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in recognition of his contribution to journalism and education.
