Mark O’Brien, a 54-year-old from Slip End, Bedfordshire, has completed a remarkable open water swim of 11km (6.8 miles), believed to be the longest unaided swim ever attempted by someone living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
Diagnosed with the progressive condition last year, Mr O’Brien defied expectations by swimming for over five and a half hours at Denham Water Ski Club in Hertfordshire — surpassing his initial goal of 10.5km.
The record-breaking attempt is now awaiting official verification by Guinness World Records.
Upon emerging from the water, visibly shivering but smiling, Mr O’Brien said, “It was a bit longer than we expected… I’m freezing, but the support has been amazing.” He added he was looking forward to “a hot shower and a burger.”
In an emotional finish, Mr O’Brien was joined by his three children for the final stretch, while a crowd of family, friends, and supportive strangers cheered him on from the shore.
The inspirational feat shines a powerful spotlight on the strength of those living with MND and has moved many across the UK.
