In a historic and awe-inspiring achievement, Jiya Rai, a 16-year-old girl from India diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, has become the first girl with autism to swim across the English Channel, conquering one of the world’s most challenging open-water swims.
Jiya began her solo swim from Abbotts Cliff in England and reached Pointe de la Courte-Dune in France in 17 hours and 25 minutes, completing the 34-kilometer (21-mile) stretch under extreme physical and environmental conditions. Her extraordinary feat has earned her a place in history as the youngest and fastest para swimmer to achieve this milestone.
The English Channel is notorious for its cold waters, strong currents, and dense maritime traffic.
Swimmers must adhere to strict regulations — no physical support, with nutrition handed over using a stick from the escort boat.
Jiya endured harsh temperatures and fatigue, powered by sheer will and discipline.
Jiya’s achievement is not just a sports milestone—it’s a powerful statement about inclusion, ability, and courage. She is the first female with autism to complete this legendary swim, making waves in the global disability and sports communities.
A Daughter of the Defence Forces
Jiya is the daughter of Madan Rai, a Master Chief Petty Officer in the Indian Navy. The Western Naval Command of India has extended official congratulations, celebrating her as an inspiration for the country and the armed forces community.
Jiya dedicated her swim to raising awareness about autism. Her English Channel crossing was part of the 2024 Sea Swimming for Autism Awareness Initiative, aligning her personal mission with global advocacy.
