A diesel-powered hovercraft service was inaugurated to connect Surat and Bhavnagar via Ghogha in Gujarat, aiming to reduce travel time between these locations. The service, however, was short-lived and ceased operations within six months due to various operational challenges.
In recent years, efforts have been made to enhance maritime connectivity in Gujarat. Notably, a roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ferry service has been introduced between Hazira (near Surat) and Ghogha, significantly reducing travel time. This modern ferry service allows passengers and vehicles to traverse the route in approximately 90 minutes, compared to the traditional overland journey of around 6.5 hours.
These developments reflect Gujarat’s ongoing commitment to improving its coastal transportation infrastructure, facilitating more efficient movement of people and goods across the region.
