Ololade Ayelabola, a Nigerian model and recent Computer Science graduate from the University of Lagos, has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records for completing the longest distance ever walked on a catwalk by a model. In October 2024, she walked an astounding 125.11 kilometers (77.74 miles) over four days at the UNILAG Indoor Sports Centre, surpassing her initial goal of 120 kilometers.
Ayelabola’s journey to this achievement was fueled by personal experiences of rejection in the fashion industry due to her height. After being disqualified from two fashion weeks in 2023 for not meeting height requirements, she resolved to challenge these industry standards. “I reminded myself that I was not only walking for myself but for every other person who is facing a barrier,” she reflected. “For every single step I took on the catwalk and on the runway, I was taking a walk against stereotypes and challenges that we face in the modeling fashion industry.”
Throughout her record-breaking walk, Ayelabola showcased outfits from various Nigerian designers, including collections from the UNILAG Theatre Arts Department, highlighting the rich diversity and creativity of Nigerian fashion. Her accomplishment not only sets a new world record but also serves as a powerful statement against the rigid standards often imposed by the fashion industry. She hopes her achievement will inspire others to challenge stereotypes and pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face.
