Dr. S. Muthulakshmi Reddy was born on July 30, 1886, in Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu. She overcame societal barriers to become the first woman in India to graduate in medicine from Madras Medical College.
As a physician, she focused on women’s health, particularly maternal and child care, and was a strong advocate for improving healthcare for women and children.
In 1926, Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy made history by becoming the first woman legislator in India, joining the Madras Legislative Council. Her entry into politics was a groundbreaking moment for women’s participation in governance.
Through her involvement with the All India Women’s Conference, she played a crucial role in the passage of the Child Marriage Restraint Act in 1930, also known as the Sarda Act. This legislation aimed to curb the practice of child marriage, a significant step towards protecting the rights of young girls.
In 1937, she became the first woman alderman of the Madras Corporation, further breaking gender barriers in local governance.
