At a time when the Gujarat government is spending a huge amount of money on promoting tourism, the Congress has raised questions about the tourism department’s ban on boating activities in the Nal Sarovar, the largest wetland spread in 120 kilometres.
The ban on boating activities came after 12 students died when their boat capsized in the Harni lake in Vadodara. Demanding resumption of boating activities at Nal Sarovar, a Ramsar site, the Gujarat Congress said that the ban has left many people unemployed, including boat owners, sailors and those who depend on small-time business in the area. Spokesperson Parthivrajsinh Kathwadia on Tuesday said that the livelihood of more than 500 sailor families was based on boating in Nalsarovar, a Ramsar site.
According to him, more than 3.2 lakh migratory birds of over 140 species came to Nalsarovar last year. Many exotic birds like flamingos, pelicans, white storks, Siberian cranes, Asian openbill and others migrate from faraway places like Eurasia, Russia and China to make their home in different wetlands of Gujarat during winter, he said, adding that approximately 61,000 tourists and bird lovers visited the place.
“The ban on boating in Nalsarovar directly affects the employment of 15 villages in three talukas—Bavla, Viramgam and Limbdi. If corporate cruises can be allowed in a metropolis like Ahmedabad, why be harsh on small time and poor sailors? Women and poor farmer families used to serve local Gujarati dishes to tourists for a living. The poor people of the surrounding villages used to earn their living from offering horse rides. First the ban on horses and now the ban on boating have had a serious impact on the employment of a large number of villagers there,” Kathwadia alleged..
A retired Army officer has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Gujarat High Court, alleging that his adult daughter has been brainwashed and unlawfully detained at the ISKCON temple on SG Highway. The petitioner claimed that temple authorities manipulated his daughter into abandoning her family and fleeing with a disciple to Mathura, taking 23 tolas of gold ornaments and Rs 3.62 lakh cash.
The HC bench of Justice Sangeeta Vishen and Justice Sanjiv Thakker has issued notices to the state government and the city police commissioner. The next hearing is scheduled for January 9, 2025.
The petitioner, a resident of Meghaninagar, stated through advocate Dharmesh Gurjar that his daughter frequently visited the ISKCON temple and became a follower of a person named Sundar Prabhu. Trusting the temple, the family allowed her visits. However, the petition alleges, the temple is involved in brainwashing young women under the guise of devotion. The petitioner claimed that temple leaders portrayed themselves as incarnations of Lord Krishna.
The petitioner also stated that Sundar Prabhu suggested marrying his daughter to one of his disciples. However, the petitioner refused the proposal due to caste differences. Following this, the family started receiving threats, and the daughter was allegedly manipulated into taking valuable belongings and fleeing to Mathura in June 2024.
The petitioner further mentioned that a Rajasthan-based ISKCON follower informed him that his daughter was dropped off at the airport by ISKCON members. Despite approaching the police commissioner, law minister and the home minister in July, no concrete action was taken, he claimed.

The Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested two persons for allegedly vandalising a statue of Dr BR Ambedkar in Khokhra area of the city. Members of the Dalit community had staged protests after the incident came to light on Monday morning. Protesters forced shops in the area to down the shutters on Tuesday.
The crime branch zeroed in on Mehul Thakor and Bholo Thakor after scanning footage of around 500 CCTV cameras and using inputs from its informants, said an official.
Thakor, a history-sheeter with a case under Prohibition Act registered against him in 2020, confessed to vandalising the statue, said Joint Commissioner of Police Sharad Singhal. Three other suspects are absconding, he added.
Jayesh Thakor, wanted in the present case, was booked for rioting in 2018 following a clash between the two communities, he said. “The accused were roaming around in the locality at night and decided to damage the statue. One of them picked up a stone and started breaking it. All five had met up at a tea stall and decided to commit the crime,” said Singhal. PTI
