In a spirited celebration of the 150th anniversary of “Vande Mataram,” the SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) brought together 3,032 participants — including students, faculty, and staff in a world record attempt to form the largest human formation depicting the words “VANDE MATARAM.” The event took place on 6 January 2026 and symbolised national unity and pride through collective participation.
Participants wore outfits in tricolour shades, representing India’s national identity, and coordinated meticulously to create the formation on campus grounds. Representatives from the World Record Union were present to oversee and validate the attempt.
Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar of SRMIST, emphasised that the attempt captured the community spirit of the institution, showcasing discipline, participation and shared responsibility in honouring a milestone in India’s cultural heritage. Dr. Karu Nagarasan, Head of Tamil Perayam at SRMIST, noted that “Vande Mataram is deeply rooted in India’s cultural and linguistic heritage,” and the event celebrated this legacy through collective human engagement.
The human formation aligns with broader national activities marking the 150‑year commemoration of “Vande Mataram,” which was originally composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875 and continues to be a symbol of unity, patriotism and national pride across India. This remarkable effort not only aimed for a world record but also strengthened the message of unity in diversity as India continues to honour the historic legacy of its cherished national song.
