BDL & DRDO to Build First Aquatic‑Aerial Drone System

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has partnered with NSTL (Naval Science & Technological Laboratory)–DRDO to co‑develop India’s first Aquatic‑Aerial System, a dual‑mode unmanned platform capable of operating both in the sky and underwater.

The contract, secured at approximately ₹69.15 lakh, marks a strategic step in India’s pursuit of self‑reliant defence technologies under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. The trans-medium drone‑like system is designed to seamlessly transition from aerial flight to sub‑surface navigation, making it uniquely suited for coastal and maritime security operations.

While detailed specifications have not yet been publicly released, early reports indicate the system will likely integrate mission adaptable payloads such as electro optical sensors for airborne ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance & Reconnaissance) and sonar or underwater sensors for sub surface tasks. Its multimodal capability could offer a versatile edge in both surveillance and situational awareness across air and sea domains.

This initiative aligns with India’s broader maritime security goals and reflects growing innovation momentum within DRDO and allied production agencies like BDL. If successful, the Aquatic‑Aerial System could set a new standard in unmanned defence platforms enhancing operational flexibility in littoral environments and reinforcing India’s strategic deterrence capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.
