Three Friends Transform Himalayan Hillside into Shimla’s First Professional Cricket Stadium

In a remarkable display of passion, persistence, and sheer willpower, three friends from Himachal Pradesh have achieved what many believed to be impossible: carving a professional cricket stadium out of a steep Himalayan hillside — without any government or BCCI assistance.

The story began in 2021 in the quiet village of Padechi, on the outskirts of Shimla. Amid pine-covered slopes and rugged terrain where sporting infrastructure is rare, friends Veenu Diwan, Ajay Thakur, and Abhay Thakur purchased a sharply slanting piece of land. What followed was not just construction — but a four-year battle against nature, gravity, weather, and doubt.

Their mission was clear: to bring world-class cricket to the hills and give local children a platform they never had.

With no public funding and no institutional backing, the trio relied entirely on their own hard work, savings, and technical ingenuity. They cut the hill, leveled the land, built massive retaining walls, and constructed a regulation-size cricket ground measuring 91 × 120 meters. What once seemed like an unworkable slope gradually transformed into a pristine green field.

Today, that dream stands tall as Shimla’s first full-fledged professional cricket stadium, complete with a quality pitch, lush outfield, and breathtaking mountain backdrop. It has already begun attracting budding cricketers from the surrounding regions who previously had to travel long distances for training.

The journey does not end here. The friends are now preparing to launch a residential cricket academy, a first-of-its-kind facility in the area that will offer young athletes top-tier training, mentorship, and exposure.

In a world where large systems often struggle to create opportunities, this extraordinary achievement by three determined individuals shows what relentless passion can accomplish. Their stadium is more than just a sports facility — it is a symbol of hope, community, and the belief that big dreams can take shape even on the steepest hillsides.
