In an extraordinary blend of adventure and environmental action, renowned Brazilian skydiver Luigi Cani carried out a daring mission to aid the restoration of the Amazon rainforest by dropping 100 million tree seeds over a deforested region. The remarkable initiative took place in 2022 and has since been hailed as one of the most innovative reforestation efforts in recent years.

Jumping from a height of approximately 6,500 feet, Cani released seeds belonging to 27 native Amazonian plant species over a heavily cleared area of forest. The seeds were packed inside a specially designed biodegradable container, engineered to break apart mid-air and disperse the seeds evenly across nearly 31,000 square feet of land. This ensured wide coverage while minimizing environmental impact.

The project was far from a publicity stunt. Luigi Cani worked closely with environmental scientists and conservation experts for nearly five years to plan every detail of the operation. Extensive research was conducted to select ecologically appropriate species and to confirm that the seeds could survive both the aerial drop and the forest conditions below.

According to environmental reports, the seeds used in the mission demonstrated an impressive 95 percent germination rate, giving the project genuine potential to regenerate forest cover and restore biodiversity in the damaged area. Scientists involved emphasized that the method could complement traditional reforestation techniques, especially in remote or hard-to-access regions of the Amazon.

Luigi Cani, a veteran extreme sports athlete with 11 world records and more than 14,000 skydives to his name, described the mission as one of the most meaningful moments of his career. While he is known globally for record-breaking jumps and high-risk feats, Cani said this project stood apart because it directly contributed to protecting the planet.

The Amazon rainforest, often referred to as the “lungs of the Earth,” continues to face severe threats from deforestation and climate change.
