In a spectacular display of music, energy, and Aussie pride, Melbourne has once again rocked the world — this time with the unmistakable wail of bagpipes! Hundreds of talented pipers gathered at Federation Square to perform a thunderous rendition of AC/DC’s legendary hit “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ’n’ Roll)”, officially setting a Guinness World Record for the largest bagpipe ensemble performing a rock song.
The event brought together more than 400 bagpipers from across Australia and beyond, all dressed in traditional kilts and armed with bagpipes tuned to perfection. The sound echoed through Melbourne’s streets, blending Scottish heritage with the rebellious soul of rock ’n’ roll — a nod to AC/DC’s iconic connection to the city.
Organized by Visit Victoria and Pipe Bands Australia, the massive musical gathering paid tribute to both Angus Young and the late Bon Scott, whose famous bagpipe-infused track from the 1975 album T.N.T. inspired generations of musicians.
Guinness World Records officials were present on-site to verify the count and sound synchronization, later confirming that Melbourne had officially broken the world record for the largest coordinated bagpipe rock performance.
“It’s a dream come true — a blend of rock, heritage, and community spirit that could only happen in Melbourne. This record belongs to every piper who showed up with heart and noise!”
Thousands of spectators gathered to witness the historic moment, some even joining in with guitars and drums, turning the city square into a spontaneous concert of unity and celebration.
The performance not only honored AC/DC’s enduring legacy but also highlighted Melbourne’s love for live music and its global reputation as a city that never stops rocking.
