A new chapter has been written in Indian sports history as Linthoi Chanambam, a 19-year-old judoka, clinched the nation’s first-ever medal at the Judo Junior World Championships in Lima, Peru.
Chanambam secured the Bronze medal in the competitive women’s 63-kilogram category after a thrilling performance in the repechage round. Her historic victory came with a decisive win over the Netherlands’ Joni Geilen.
The road to the podium was a test of the young athlete’s resilience. After an early defeat to Japan’s So Morichika, Linthoi fought her way back through the repechage bracket. In the bronze medal contest, despite facing pressure and an early penalty, the judoka from Manipur displayed remarkable composure.
She sealed the match with an attacking move that culminated in a decisive ippon (a full point in judo), marking a watershed moment for Indian judo on the global stage.
This historic Junior World medal adds to an already impressive list of achievements for Linthoi. She previously etched her name in the record books by becoming the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the Cadet World Championships in 2022.
Her journey this year has been particularly challenging, as she only recently returned to the mat following surgery to repair a torn ACL. This medal serves as powerful validation of her dedication, perseverance, and the support from her long-time coach, Mamuka Kizilashvili.
Linthoi Chanambam’s bronze is more than just a medal; it’s a beacon of hope and an inspiration for the next generation of Indian athletes aiming to compete with the world’s best.
